Surrey Search and Rescue Tasks for 1999

28 Dec. 99 - 15 North Shore Rescue, 9 Coquitlam, 4 Lions Bay, 2 Maple Ridge and 3 Surrey SAR members responded to assist RCMP in search for a missing snowshoer in the Mount Seymour area. Helicopter spotted the male and his 3 dogs. Male and dogs were brought out by helicopter.

11 Nov. 99 - 77 SAR members from Hope, Chilliwack, Surrey, Ridge Meadows and Central Fraser Valley responded to the Carolyn Mine area north of Hope to search for a missing native male mushroom picker. The subject was found in good condition. However, 2 family members were then reported missing after they went into the area to search for the male. They were located alive and well.

21 Oct. 99 - 24 Surrey and 11 Central Fraser Valley SAR members searched the Bear Creek Park following report of a missing mentally challenged 25-year-old male. He was located in some bush near the creek, alive and mildly hypothermic. He was transported to hospital by BCAS following complaint of head injury.

17 Oct. 99 - 10 Central Fraser Valley SAR augmented by 4 Ridge Meadows and 6 Surrey SAR responded with boats to Derby Reach on the Fraser River following report of a missing suicidal female. Her body was located in a fisherman's net near Port Mann Bridge. Identify was confirmed and SAR teams were stood down.

09 Oct. 99 - 6 Central Fraser SAR members, 3 Coquitlam SAR members, and 12 Surrey SAR members met with RCMP on 09 Oct 99, to establish strategy concerning search for a 26 yr. old male missing since 05 Oct., in the Burns Bog area of Surrey/Delta. Search was conducted during 10 Oct. No sign(s) of missing person were located. Tasking was subsequently closed.

26 July 99 - 15 members of the Surrey SAR team continued their evidence search. TASK # 501500.

22 July 99 - 22 Surrey SAR Team members responded to RCMP request for assistance in evidence search for a knife and handbag in Hawthorne Park, Surrey.

11 July 99 - UPDATE Bul.#2899, Item 13, refers. Search for 82-year-old female suffering Alzheimer's continued on the 12 July. A total of 67 SAR members responded from CFV, Abbotsford, Surrey, Chilliwack, Comox Valley, Victoria, Salmon Arm and Barriere. PEP Air also assisted in transporting SAR members to the search area. The female was located and turned over to BC Ambulance.

16 July 99 - 15 SAR members from Central Fraser Valley and Surrey searched for missing 6-year-old female at 72nd Ave, Surrey. Child was located in good condition.

17 July 99 - 24 Coquitlam, 3 North Shore, 3 Maple Ridge and 2 Surrey SAR members responded to search for an overdue hiker in the Buntzen Lake area, Anmore. The male had gone hiking up a difficult trail and failed to return. SAR members located the male in good condition and escorted him down to bottom of trail.

11 July 99 - 10 Central Fraser Valley, and 18 Surrey SAR assisted Abbotsford City Police in searching for an 82 year old missing female. Person is suffering from Alzheimer's. As of 0200 July 12 she had not been found and other SAR teams being brought in to assist. Search will recommence AM July 12.

24 May 99 - 20 Chilliwack SAR members responded to the Chipmunk Creek area near Foley Creek on Chilliwack Lake Road to search for a missing 18 year old female. She is reportedly 2 months pregnant and wandered away from a campsite at 06:30 hours. Extensive search of the area produced no results and SAR team stood down overnight. Search resumed on 25 May with mutual aid assistance from Hope, Central Fraser Valley, Kent/Harrison, Mission, Ridge Meadows and Surrey SAR teams. Search resumed with RCMP Helicopter and female was located in good condition 1600 25 May.

10 May 99 - 20 Surrey SAR members responded to the 120th and 74th area of Delta following report of a missing 20 year old special needs female. She was reported missing from the Sikh Temple since 8:30pm. Search was stood down after RCMP located missing female at home. She had left the temple on her own without notifying her parents.

14 May 99 - Surrey and Ridge Meadows Search and Rescue teams were requested by RCMP to search Stanley Park, Vancouver for the bodies of 2 boys who were murdered in the 1980's. The search was conducted on 15 May, however nothing was found.

30 April 99 - Maple Ridge SAR team was requested to assist RCMP in search of a possible body. Search commenced on the morning of 01 May. Mutual aid was provided by Coquitlam, Mission, Surrey and Central Fraser Valley SAR teams. The search covered an area of over ten acres of bushed and open farmland. Initially, the search was for a possible missing person, which then became a possible body and eventually searchers were to look for evidence to support either possibility. Nothing of interest was located.

05 Feb. 99 - 20 members of Surrey, Coquitlam, Maple Ridge and North Shore Rescue members responded at first light on 6 February following report of a missing male in the University Endowment Lands area. He has been missing for two days and his vehicle was located, with a suicide note inside, on 5 February. RCC was requested to provide a CCG vessel to conduct a sweep of the area. Searchers located the missing male, deceased, and the body was recovered and handed over to the Coroner.
