Surrey Search and Rescue Tasks for 2000

11 November 00 - 5 Surrey SAR responded to Delta Police request for a boat to attend at the Alex Fraser Bridge. Incident involved a male threatening to jump from the bridge. He eventually jumped into the Fraser River and was recovered by a Coast Guard boat. Not known if he survived. Surrey SAR team was stood down.

1 October 00 - 01 October - SAR members from Surrey, Central Fraser Valley, Ridge Meadows, Coquitlam, Lions Bay, Mission and North Shore SAR teams are participating in the search for a 10 yr old female who went missing from the Cloverdale Fairgrounds area.
UPDATE. Bul.#4100, item 3 refers. Search continued through until 07 Oct for the missing 10 year old girl from the Cloverdale area. Teams were stood down at 1930 hrs that evening. A total of 160 registered volunteers were involved in the search, however, nothing was found. Bul.#4000, item 26 Refers.
UPDATE02 Oct the search for the 10 yr old female continued. Police suspect the female was abducted. A total of 726 searchers participated, 90 of which were SAR team members. Teams involved were from Surrey, Central Fraser Valley, Ridge Meadows, Coquitlam, Lions Bay, Mission, North Shore, Chilliwack, Vernon, Penticton, Barriere, Kamloops, Victoria, Duncan, Pemberton, Squamish, Whistler and Sunshine Coast. In addition there were CARDA Dogs, RCMP heli, PEP Air, Forestry Aircraft and SAR resources from Whatcom County, WA. Female is still missing. On 07 Oct 00, 155 SAR members from various Lower Mainland teams plus 160 general public resumed search. Nothing found to date. Search ongoing.

07 September 00 - - 23 Coquitlam SAR, 6 Ridge Meadows SAR and 1 Surrey SAR members responded to assist RCMP in search for a missing despondent 14 year old female in the Coquitlam Town Centre. RCMP located female on a wooded embankment. She was conscious. SAR members brought her out to ambulance for transport to a care facility.

22 August 00 - - 46 SAR members from Lytton, Pemberton, Lions Bay, North Shore Rescue, PEP Air, Ridge Meadows, Sunshine Coast, and Surrey responded to assist RCMP in search for a missing 52-year-old male hiker in the Lizzie Creek, Stein Valley area. Male was located on the east side of Tundra Lake. He was hungry and thirsty but suffered no medical problems.

16 August 00 - - 4 Chilliwack, 5 Central Fraser Valley, 6 Coquitlam, 2 Kent/Harrison, 8 Lions Bay, 2 Mission, 3 Ridge Meadow and 9 Surrey SAR members responded to assist RCMP in search for a missing hiker at Slesse Creek, Chilliwack River Valley area. Whatcom County SAR (USA) provided assistance as well. Hiker was located 3 km on the American side of the border. He suffered undetermined injures and was taken to the hospital by his parents.

13 August 00 - - 8 North Shore Rescue, 2 Ridge Meadows, 2 Squamish and 4 Surrey SAR members responded to a search for 2 missing female hikers in the Lynn Headwaters Park, North Vancouver. Both females were located alive and well.

23 July 00 - - UPDATE. Bul.#3000, item 29 refers. 34 SAR members from Squamish, Central Fraser Valley, Chilliwack, Coquitlam, North Shore, Pemberton, Ridge Meadows, Sunshine Coast and Surrey searched the south side of the Chief for a missing hiker. He was located uninjured and brought out. He had become disoriented.

22 July 00 - - 51 SAR members from Coquitlam, Ridge Meadows, Central Fraser Valley, Lions Bay, North Shore, and Surrey responded to rescue 3 hikers stranded at the north end of Buntzen Lake. The 3 hikers required assistance. One female hiker was evacuated via a 4 hour rope rescue and transported to hospital with undetermined injuries.

02 July 00 - - A total of 50 searchers from Hope, CFV, Mission, Kent Harrison, Chilliwack, Lions Bay, Ridge Meadows and Surrey SAR teams participated in the search for two overdue boaters on the Skagit River. The river was searched to USA border in cooperation with USA Park Rangers. A RCMP helicopter spotted the boaters. They had decided to stay out camping an extra night. Both were in good condition and were prepared to stay yet another night if they were unable to get out.

30 May 00 - - 13 Sunshine Coast, 12 Lions Bay, 6 Surrey and 4 Squamish SAR members responded to search the Gambier Island area for 2 missing female hikers. RCMP helicopter was tasked to do an aerial sweep of the area and CCG Auxiliary conducted shoreline search. A passing logging truck driver spotted the two hikers on a logging road and transported them to safety. Both hikers reported to be in good condition.

22 May 00 - - 88 SAR members from Chilliwack, Hope, Kent- Harrison, Mission and Surrey SAR Teams assisted RCMP during 22 and 23 May 00, in search for a male, who had fallen into the Fraser River between Chilliwack and Hope. Apparently two males had been fishing on the riverbank when one fell in. The second male attempted to rescue first male, however, failed to do so and required rescuing himself. Rescued male was transported to hospital for medical attention. Extensive searches have failed to locate the missing male.

12 May 00 - - 20 members from Central Fraser Valley and Surrey SAR teams responded to the search for a missing despondent youth. He was located in good condition, in the wooded area near his group home.

12 March 00 - 15 Surrey SAR members assisted in search for a missing 14 year old male, considered to be suicidal and who was last seen in the area of the south side of Pattullo Bridge, Surrey. Hovercraft, assisting with search, located the youth deceased in the Fraser River about 1/6 mile upstream from the Pattullo Bridge. Body was recovered from the river and turned over to the Coroner.

22 Feb. 00 - Coquitlam SAR members responded to assist RCMP in search for possible murder weapons in the North Road and Lougheed area. Further searches were carried out on 23 Feb 00 by Coquitlam and Surrey SAR members.

16 Feb. 00 - 9 Central Fraser Valley and 15 Surrey SAR members responded to assist RCMP in shoreline search for a missing kayaker in the Boundary Bay/White Rock area. Hovercraft, Canadian and US Coast Guards, and a dive team also assisted in the search. No sign of missing kayaker. SAR teams have been stood down.

Feb. 00 - 19 Lions Bay, 4 Central Fraser Valley, 5 Coquitlam, 2 North Shore, 1 Ridge Meadows, 6 Squamish and 3 Surrey SAR members responded to the Folkstone Subdivision area of West Vancouver following report of a missing, possibly suicidal, female. Search continued throughout the night with nil results. The RCMP stood the search down when it was confirmed that the female had contacted her boyfriend by phone during the morning.

13 Jan. 00 - A total of 57 members of Central Fraser Valley, Coquitlam, Surrey, North Shore Rescue and Ridge Meadows SAR teams participated in the search for 2 boaters missing for 2 days off of White Rock. A land search was conducted in conjunction with a marine search under the direction of Rescue Coordination Centre. A number of articles were located including their capsized boat, a floater vest identified as belonging to one of the missing boaters. On 15 Jan, 15 Surrey SAR conducted shoreline and bluff search. Nothing was found and PEP SAR participation was concluded. (See Surrey Leader Article)
